US Gambling Revenue Results for January Show Different State Trends
Las Vegas and Atlantic City have continued to experience a gradual rise in gambling revenue, firmly maintaining their positions at the forefront. Yet, other states have failed to imitate these growth patterns.
Virginia, for instance, mirrors the upward trend in gaming revenue witnessed in January, a path followed by a handful of states. On the other hand, Kansas has experienced an unexpected decline in gaming revenue during the same period.
According to the latest gaming report from the Kansas Lottery, the state’s casinos witnessed a decline in total revenue, with a notable downturn to $30,311,619 in January. This marked an 18.9% decrease compared to the robust casino revenue of $37,442,477 in December 2023.
Furthermore, when juxtaposed with the figures from January 2023, there was an 8.46% dip in casino revenue, tallying up to $33,114,509 during that particular period.
Among the quartet of operational casinos in the state, Kansas Star Casino stood out with the highest revenue, a commendable $12,024,137. Despite this achievement, it faced a setback with a 10.51% decline compared to January 2023 when revenue reached $13,435,567.
Hollywood Casino, securing the second position in revenue generation, similarly experienced a decrease, recording $11,903,168. This represented a 5.77% decline compared to the same period the previous year when revenue reached $12,631,653.
Boot Hill Casino reported revenue of $3,501,997, signaling a 3.54% decrease from January 2023, which stood at $3,630,648. Interestingly, it had also achieved a higher figure in December 2023, with revenue amounting to $4,380,086.
Bringing up the rear, Kansas Crossing Casino reported the lowest revenue, witnessing a 15.64% decrease from the previous year, totaling $2,882,317. In January 2023, the handle was $3,416,641, while in December 2023 recorded $3,329,140.
In the final stretch of the fiscal year 2024, concluding on January 31, 2024, the amalgamated revenue from Kansas casinos reached a substantial $231,041,875, signaling a marginal decline of 1.72% compared to the preceding fiscal year ending on January 31, 2023.
It’s worth noting that, as of now, Kansas does not legally permit online casinos, but players can engage in gaming activities through sweepstakes casinos.
Shifting the focus to the realm of sports betting in the Sunflower State, January 2024 witnessed an approximately 8% downturn compared to December 2023. The total sports betting handle for January amounted to $259.68 million.
In this arena, retail sports betting contributed $11.5 million, while the online counterpart in Kansas amassed a notable $228.0 million.
For context, December 2023 reported figures of $10.58 million for retail sports betting and a substantial $249.10 million for online sports betting across the six online sportsbooks operating in the state.
In retail sports betting, DraftKings led with a handle of $402,722, while Barstool (now ESPN Bet) commanded the highest wagers at $8.92 million.
FanDuel had a handle of $1.5 million, and Caesars secured $659,438. In online sports betting, DraftKings maintained dominance with $96.7 million, followed closely by FanDuel at $77.2 million.
BetMGM reported $21.2 million in handles, ESPN Bet had $20.3 million, Caesars recorded $10.5 million, and PointsBet had the least at $1.9 million.
For the fiscal year 2024, Kansas sportsbooks collectively had a $64.3 million retail betting handle, with online sportsbooks contributing significantly at $1.3 billion.
