Svenska Spel Boasts 93% Healthy Revenue in Q2
Svenska Spel reported that 93.2% of its revenue was healthy in the second quarter of 2024. The organization defines healthy revenue as income from players who gamble responsibly and have a low risk of gambling problems.
This is a 1.1% increase compared to Q1 of 2024 (92.2%). Anna Johnson, the president and CEO of Svenska Spel, stated that their goal has always remained the same – to increase healthy revenue by implementing “measures that strengthen consumer protection” around the games.
Calculations Are Based on Playscan, An Analysis Tool By Svenska Spel
Playscan is an analysis tool by Svenska Spel that calculates healthy income. It was developed in collaboration with Sustainable Interaction, a group of independent responsible gambling specialists.
Mikael Franzén, Svenska Spel’s head of gambling responsibility, said that the goal of Playscan was to detect when players were stepping out of the boundaries of responsible gambling in time. In doing so, Franzén expressed confidence that the organization would be able to control gambling and prevent it from becoming risky and escalating to problem gambling.
He also noted that if they noticed that a player was showing signs of developing harm, Svenska Spel would use several tools, including notifications and direct contact. However, if the case became extreme, Svenska Spel could resort to completely blocking players.
Johnson doubled down by saying that as Svenska Spel strengthened its responsible gambling measures, healthy revenue had been experiencing steady growth. She expressed hope that more licensed gambling entities in Sweden would start to report this figure reliably and work together to make the industry as safe as possible.
New Measures Are To Be Introduced By the End of 2024
Svenska Spel noted that it plans to make the gambling industry as safe as possible. That’s why it intends to add more responsible gambling measures by the end of 2024, most likely this autumn. According to the organization, the new tools are set to have a positive effect on healthy revenue statistics.
Moreover, the organization noted that the positive changes were a result of the successful restructuring that occurred between January and June. That included a thorough review of the organization and its work methods, reorganization, and closing of two casinos in Malmö and Gothenburg.
Johnson stated that the actions allowed Svenska Spel to lower its costs and strengthen its operating margin in the second quarter of 2024.
Svenska Spel Decided to Report on Healthy Revenues in June
The reports on healthy revenue were also one of the changes that Svenska Spel brought in 2024. The organization informed the public about them in June. One of the main reasons why Svenska Spel decided it was important to strengthen responsible gambling was the results from a 2023 survey.
According to the survey, which Spelinspektionen conducted last year, 75% of the Swedish adult population reported that they’d gambled for real money in the past 12 months.
Johnson believes that reporting healthy revenue is one of the best ways to “counteract gambling problems” and show people that it is possible to run a gambling company “in a sustainable way.” Additionally, she believes that by sharing these numbers, Svenska Spel would increase trust in the gambling industry.
Erik Strand, Svenska Spel’s board chair, stated that reporting healthy revenue was a good way to increase transparency and that this change would play a vital part in the work with responsible gambling.
