Next States To Legalize Online Gambling
Indiana
Recent Bill: HB1536
Indiana was considered the most likely to become the No. 7/No. 8 state to legalize online gambling. However, the bill, sponsored by Rep. Ethan Manning, fell on deaf ears. The legislation began circulating in December 2022 and eventually appeared in the House. However, it was officially dead in late February 2023 as it didn’t advance from the House to the Senate.
Looking ahead, we could see revisions to the bill, such as tax rates, which went from 18% to 20%. It looks like there’s momentum for this to get done; it just didn’t this time around.
New York
Recent Bill: A3634
After Indiana, New York was considered the next state to offer legalized online gambling. Senator Joseph Addabbo was a massive proponent of bringing online gambling to the state following the success of online sports betting.
Unfortunately, it seems like there’s some “gambling fatigue” after getting sports betting done and finally launching in 2022.
It’s possible that 2024 will become the year. New York would be fantastic for online gambling.
New Hampshire
Recent Bill: SB104
Tucked away in New England, New Hampshire became a quiet contender for online gambling, but the bill, introduced by Senator Timothy Lang, was eventually killed.
Initially, his bill passed in the Senate and went onto the House Ways and Means Committee. Sadly, the bill failed to advance because it was compromised in the Senate. The online casino bill included no online slots, a massive part of online gambling.
The House Ways and Means Committee had 20 members vote against it, but it sounds like it could advance if Lang or others can get online slots in there.
Maryland
Recent Bill: SB267
It may have to wait until 2025 (or later), but Maryland will likely offer online gambling eventually. Beyond introducing bills and getting them to pass through the proper channels, there needs to be a referendum on the state constitution for gambling expansion.
Ronald Watson and Nancy King, two Senators, introduced a bill to be voted on for the 2024 general election, but the deadline for 2023 passed, so it won’t be up for a vote in 2024 but could become something at a later date.
