New York Introduces New Self-Exclusion Program for Gamblers
New Yorkers experiencing concerns about potential gambling issues and seeking to voluntarily exclude themselves from both retail and online betting platforms now have a more accessible option.
The New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) unveiled a new initiative on Monday, developed in collaboration with the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support (OASAS) and the New York State Gaming Commission.
The Voluntary Self-Exclusion Support Program (VSE) provides a complimentary service linking individuals who want to refrain from gambling with a designated NYCPG staff member.
This staff member guides the person through the self-exclusion process, helps complete the necessary paperwork for inclusion on the state’s list and facilitates connections with problem gambling treatment and peer support providers.
NYCPG Executive Director James Maney emphasized that the program aims to provide care and assistance, breaking down barriers through the incorporation of online notary services to streamline the remote VSE process and connect individuals with knowledgeable staff members.
As indicated by a 2020 survey commissioned by OASAS, 4.4% of adults in New York are identified as being at risk of developing a gambling problem, with an additional 0.7% already meeting the criteria for problem gambling or a gambling disorder.
Individuals who choose voluntary self-exclusion are prohibited from engaging in any form of gambling within the state, encompassing both casino wagering and sports betting.
Dr. Chinazo Cunningham, OASAS Commissioner, emphasized that OASAS oversees a comprehensive system of prevention, treatment, harm reduction and recovery services for individuals impacted by addiction throughout the state, including problem gambling.
Voluntary Self-Exclusion can serve as an effective prevention strategy to alleviate gambling harms.
The new support program facilitates the completion of the self-exclusion process and provides a chance to connect with OASAS local problem gambling community support services for addressing further harm.
Robert Williams, Executive Director of the New York State Gaming Commission, emphasized the commitment to ensuring that licensed facilities operate responsibly and sensitively for those in need of help.
Williams praised the New York Council on Problem Gambling’s VSE Support Program for providing individuals with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions for their well-being.
