Massachusetts Gaming Commission Confirms Chair Appointment of Jordan Maynard
Jordan Maynard is no longer the interim chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). On October 28, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey announced his permanent appointment at the top level of the gaming regulator.
Maynard’s confirmation as chair follows the retirement of Cathy Judd-Stein. The former chair completed her term during a period for the commission that was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rollout of legal sports betting in Massachusetts.
Maynard joined the MGC in 2022, having been appointed through a collaborative effort involving former Gov. Charlie Baker. Before joining the commission, he served as chief secretary to the governor, where he developed a robust understanding of state governance and regulatory practices.
As chair, Maynard will oversee the MGC’s ongoing initiatives, including a focus on youth safety in sports betting. He leads the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Youth Sports Betting Safety Initiative, a program aimed at educating young people about the risks of gambling and preventing underage betting. This initiative was announced earlier this year in partnership with state officials and various stakeholders from the sports community.
In a statement, Gov. Healey expressed her gratitude for Maynard’s leadership during his interim term, praising his ability to build consensus and navigate complex regulatory landscapes. She emphasized his understanding of the agency’s mission and his commitment to serving the interests of Massachusetts residents.
Maynard has demonstrated his regulatory acumen through his handling of industry discussions, particularly during a pivotal hearing last month that addressed betting limits—an issue of significant debate within the sports betting community. The hearing involved presentations from representatives of regulated sportsbooks and consumer advocates, showcasing Maynard’s ability to foster respectful dialogue and maintain order during intense discussions.
Following his appointment, Maynard expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him by Gov. Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll. He conveyed a strong commitment to advancing the MGC’s mission, which is vital for maintaining integrity and transparency within the gaming industry.
In addition to Maynard’s appointment, Governor Healey named Paul Brodeur as a new MGC commissioner, completing the commission’s roster. Brodeur, who held office as the mayor of Melrose for six years, is known for his successful management of municipal budgets and initiatives to enhance public safety infrastructure in the Boston suburb.
