Netflix, the streaming giant, is making headlines for an unusual reason – it has approved a new Squid Game slot machine, marking its first licensing agreement in the casino and gaming industry.

The South Korean survival drama series, which is one of Netflix’s all-time most-watched shows, served as the inspiration for this slot game.

The game will feature several iconic (and deadly) challenges from the series, including Red Light-Green Light, Tug of War and the Glass Tile.

It was developed by the gaming company Light & Wonder, which will also release a digital slot game based on the Squid Game series with three bonus rounds.

The Squid Game-themed slot machine is expected to debut in casinos in 2024 and will be housed in Light & Wonder’s Horizon large-screen cabinet, boasting a 75-inch screen with 600,000 individual micro-LED pixels.

The cabinet features dual play buttons, a mobile charger and a 27-inch touchscreen to provide players with an immersive and seamless gaming experience.

Las Vegas-based Light & Wonder, formerly known as Scientific Games, is responsible for creating the Netflix slot machine. This company specializes in producing and marketing both physical and digital games.

Meanwhile, Netflix is preparing to launch Squid Game: The Trials, an immersive pop-up experience, in Los Angeles on December 6, 2023. Players will participate in six challenges during the 70-minute experience, with tickets starting at $39 each.

These real-life game events and the slot machine are Netflix’s latest efforts to build a franchise around the unexpected success of the Korean series, which debuted in 2021.

Additionally, Netflix will debut Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality series featuring 456 players from around the world competing for a single $4.56 million cash prize, on November 22, 2023.

The original Squid Game series premiered on Netflix on September 17, 2021, and revolves around a group of desperate South Koreans who are lured into participating in a deadly competition involving childhood games in exchange for the chance to escape their dire financial situations.

Most choose to return after realizing that this contest may be their last opportunity to secure the desperately needed money to survive.

Furthermore, reports suggest that a second season of the top-rated series is currently in development.
