Las Vegas Casino Strike No Closer to Finding a Resolution
The Culinary Union has been negotiating a new contract on behalf of numerous workers, but progress could be faster.
After six months of talks involving MGM International, Wynn Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, along with two significant demonstrations on the Strip, a potential strike by the Culinary Union looms on the horizon in the weeks to come.
At present, the union is amidst another round of negotiation sessions. On Friday, union leaders met with representatives from Caesars Entertainment.
Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge mentioned that they presented their proposals to Caesars throughout the morning. According to Pappageorge, the organization had the opportunity to connect virtually with Culinary Union leaders during an afternoon recess.
“Currently, the organization is evaluating our proposal and will present its proposals. We hold a positive outlook regarding the potential for progress,” stated Pappageorge.
Pappageorge conveyed that although they made some progress in discussions with MGM, it wasn’t enough to prevent a possible strike.
He explained that their demands include a wage increase, job security and more advanced notification to employees regarding significant job changes due to technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and robots.
Pappageorge also noted that MGM had improved their pay offer, but there’s still work to be done.
He mentioned that they are closely monitoring the actions of their sister union, the Detroit Casino Council, as its members prepare to go on strike. The Detroit Casino Council had a meeting with MGM International on Thursday.
Substantial progress toward a resolution has yet to be achieved, as highlighted by Pappageorge. The Secretary-Treasurer emphasized that they are extending their complete support to them.
The Culinary Union’s upcoming engagement will be with Wynn Resorts on Monday, with no further negotiation sessions planned.
Pappageorge expressed that the union will furnish an update on the outcomes of their negotiations with Caesars Entertainment and Wynn on Monday.
He added that if this round of discussions does not yield positive results, a strike deadline could be set before the Formula 1 weekend.
