Google To Allow More Real-Money Gambling Apps on Google Play

In the coming days, users of one of the largest technology companies might witness a surge in gambling apps on the Google Play store.

Recently, Google made public its commitment to endorse the support for real-money gaming (RMG) apps within the Play Store. This strategy involves the introduction of a more extensive array of games and the inclusion of apps from operators not covered by current licensing frameworks.

The outlined plan, detailed in an Android Developer’s Blog post, is slated for implementation in 2024. Google has underscored its dedication to expanding RMG app support, set to commence in June 2024, with the initial rollout in countries like India, Mexico and Brazil.

The further extension of availability to additional countries is anticipated in subsequent phases.

Karan Gambhir, Google’s Director of Global Trust and Safety Partnerships, expressed satisfaction with the new approach, emphasizing its potential to create new business opportunities for developers worldwide.

The primary focus, however, remains on ensuring user safety throughout this expansion.

In 2021, Google embarked on the journey to incorporate Real-Money Gaming (RMG) apps, where users invest real-world money for the chance to win more, into the Play Store.

This initiative started by permitting specific RMG apps in 15 additional countries, including the United States.

The recent decision comes on the heels of successful test pilots conducted in India and Mexico in 2022. These pilots allowed certain categories of RMG apps, such as daily fantasy sports gambling apps in both countries and rummy apps in India.

Historically, Google restricted RMG apps on its Play Store to those operating within the regulatory frameworks established by governments.

Looking ahead, Google Play is set to broaden its horizons by welcoming new types of RMG games and operators that fall outside existing licensing frameworks but comply with legal standards. Developers, however, must continue to adhere to all pertinent local guidelines and Google policies.

Google’s RMG support page now includes eligible game types like online casino games, sports betting, horse racing (if regulated separately), lotteries and daily fantasy sports. Developers, especially those international, have urged Google to expand its acceptance of RMG games, including online versions of local card games lacking regulations.

Additionally, Google is exploring changes to its service fee model for subscriptions and in-app purchases, with details yet to be revealed.

The company aims to align its model with Google Play’s value and sustain the Android and Play ecosystems. Ongoing collaboration with developers ensures adaptation to industry-specific economics and earning models.

More details will be released in the coming months, with promised safeguards like age restrictions and geographical limitations for consumer protection.
