Detroit’s Hollywood Casino Becomes Home to First ESPN Bet Retail Sportsbook
ESPN Bet, in collaboration with PENN Entertainment, celebrated a significant milestone by inaugurating its retail sportsbook at Detroit’s Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
This event, held on April 24 at 4 PM, marked a transition from the previous Barstool Sportsbook branding to the new ESPN Bet branding following PENN Entertainment’s termination of its partnership with Barstool Sportsbook in August.
The rebranding decision coincided with ESPN Bet’s debut in November, marking a pivotal shift in the casino’s approach to sports betting. In a February Q4 2023 earnings call, PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden unveiled the rebranding initiative, underlining the company’s dedication to elevating the betting experience for its clientele.
The revamped sportsbook site boasts upgraded features, including 40 state-of-the-art betting kiosks, 25 high-definition televisions, and a striking 30-foot video wall. These are designed to provide patrons with an immersive and engaging environment for sports wagering.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown, which emerged as the top performer among Detroit’s three casinos in terms of retail sportsbook handle in 2023, reported an impressive $71.1 million in total bets and generated $6.7 million in gross revenue.
The timing of the sportsbook’s reopening strategically aligns with the NFL Draft, a highly anticipated event drawing significant attention from sports fans and bettors. Scheduled to take place in Detroit on April 25, the NFL Draft presents a prime opportunity for Hollywood Casino at Greektown to capitalize on increased foot traffic and betting activity.
To commemorate the occasion, Hollywood Casino at Greektown has planned an official unveiling event featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony. It will also host a live broadcast of the First Draft podcast hosted by ESPN sports personalities.
Notable figures, such as NFL insiders and analysts Mina Kimes, Matt Miller, and Field Yates, will be in attendance and provide insights and commentary on the draft proceedings.
The potential economic impact of the NFL Draft cannot be overstated, as evidenced by last year’s event in Kansas City, which injected $164 million into the state’s economy over three days.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown stands to benefit significantly from the influx of visitors and betting activity associated with the draft, reinforcing its position as a key contributor to Detroit’s entertainment and tourism sector.
Looking beyond retail sports betting, PENN Entertainment has set ambitious targets for its online sports betting platform in collaboration with ESPN Bet.
With a goal of capturing 20% of the online sports betting market by 2027, PENN aims to leverage the strength of the ESPN brand and its widespread popularity among sports fans to drive user acquisition and engagement.
Since its launch in November, the ESPN Bet digital platform has made notable strides in the online sports betting market, emerging as one of the top performers in terms of betting handle.
With an impressive 8% market share, ESPN Bet has demonstrated its competitiveness against established players, signaling its potential to disrupt the status quo and emerge as a dominant force in the digital sports betting arena.
