UK Casinos Are Finally Open: But Is It Helpful For Genting UK Staff?
After a very tough holiday period due to Covid-19, British casinos are finally starting to open. This great news was leaked to the press with the announcement of the final phase of the government’s economic restart program, which was presented by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. According to the latest information, UK gambling establishments will open their doors starting August 1, 2020. At the same time, gambling houses have not been able to conduct full-fledged activities since March. All ground points were forced to close, while the government tried to take the situation with a wave of infections under control.
It is worth noting that, starting last month, operators were allowed to open land-based stores.
However, this did not affect the casino. Despite all the measures taken by the representatives of British gambling platforms, as well as significant efforts to lobby for appropriate permits from 12,000 employees of casinos, the decision of the Betting & Gaming Council remained unchanged.
Nevertheless, all market participants joyfully welcomed the statement of the head of the UK government and appealed to the regional authorities of Scotland and Wales to restart the gaming market as soon as possible. What’s more, it concerns no less than 2,000 casino employees, who were in the dry docks for more than several months. Finally, they witnessed a chance to start performing their duties.
Dark Hour for Genting UK
While the government’s announcement looks like manna from heaven for the gaming market, the news likely came too late for the more than 1,600 playground employees operated by Genting UK. The day before the relatively good news, the company’s management announced that it would be forced to lay off employees due to the temporary closure of the business and the reduction in trading operations. Moreover, the brand’s management will have to make adjustments to the operating model to improve business efficiency.
The company also stated that the bulk of those employees who could be laid off will be on standby. In other words, the brand will try to get its employees back into business as soon as possible. However, how long the dismissed employees will have to wait for a good time to come remains unknown.
In its turn, the company said it relied heavily on the government’s job retention scheme. However, despite this, the situation turned out to be very disastrous for the operator. In any case, it will have to reduce the required number of employees. Nevertheless, there remains a chance that the news that was announced on Friday will possibly have a positive effect on the situation, and the online operator will reconsider its decision for the better.
By the way, the platform mentioned last month that casinos located in Bristol, Torquay, and Margate are unlikely to reopen instantly, even after the government’s most positive news. It is worth noting that the head of the British division Paul Wilcock has already stated that the company has several scenarios for ensuring the business’s survival.
Notably, the company that runs 42 casinos across the country, underwent a rebranding process to expand its presence in the poker market with the brand new GentingBet brand. However, as it turned out, the plans to expand the market were never destined to come true, since the coronavirus pandemic intervened in the situation.
The company’s Singapore subsidiary announced this week about the possible layoff of some 2,000 employees who worked at the popular Resorts World Sentosa. The ground-based casino was opened back in April and only recently was able to partially resume its work. However, this is unlikely to affect the general state of affairs.
